Puget Sound Nutrient General Permit Formal Public Comment Period
We invite you to provide comments on the formal draft of the Puget Sound Nutrient General Permit. This National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) water quality permit will help control the discharge of nutrients from domestic wastewater treatment plants, in accordance with the federal Water Pollution Control Act and state Water Pollution Control laws.
Excess nutrients can cause too much plant and algae growth which ultimately depletes dissolved oxygen. Many parts of Puget Sound have oxygen levels that fall below the concentrations needed for marine life to thrive and concentrations that are below the state’s water quality criteria. Ecology must require WWTPs to control nutrients consistent with the U.S. Clean Water Act and Washington’s Water Pollution Control Act. Please note that this comment form is for the purpose of submitting a comment to the Washington State Department of Ecology. Commenter contact information is optional.
