Twin Bridges - Monte Cristo SEPA DNS and Checklist
Ecology invites comments on a proposal to remove the collapsed North Bridge at the Twin Bridges site on the South Fork Sauk River, about 1 mile south of Barlow Pass.
Why this cleanup is needed
The bridge contains creosote-treated wood that is releasing harmful chemicals, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), into the river. The river provides habitat for threatened fish species.
What’s proposed
Ecology will remove the North Bridge’s steel girders, timber decking, and piles. The creosote-treated material will go to an approved landfill. Disturbed ground will be reshaped and left to revegetate naturally. The South Bridge, which hikers still use, will stay in place, and trail use will not change. Work is planned for fall 2028 and should take up to four weeks.
