The comment period is now open through May 15, 2026 at 11:59 p.m.
As part of the state’s transition to clean energy, Ecology is leading a collaborative process to identify opportunities and risks for developing geothermal energy resources in Washington. Currently, there are no proposed geothermal projects in Washington. This collaborative process is intended to provide an early, thoughtful look at key issues as interest in geothermal resources continues to grow.
The draft legislative update we are seeking comment on summarizes our engagement activities to date and what we’ve heard from communities, Tribes, industry and other interested parties. It also includes preliminary recommendations to the governor and Legislature for developing geothermal energy resources. We will consider feedback as we prepare the final legislative update, which is due June 30, 2026.
